David is originally from Kansas City where he attended Bishop Miege High School. After high school he worked in the construction industry and was blessed to spend time as a stay-at-home parent. David attended Washburn University, earning a degree in secondary English education. He then earned his masters degree in education administration from Fort Hays State University. Prior to joining the Maur Hill - Mount Academy family in 2022, David was a teacher and building principal at Sabetha High School. David and his wife Kerry have two children; Henry attends Notre Dame University and is currently an ACE teacher in Brownsville, Texas. Ellen is a junior at Benedictine College studying music and psychology.

Whitney is originally from Oskaloosa, KS, graduating from Oskaloosa High School in 2005. After high school she attended Emporia State University, graduating in 2009 and 2011 with a masters degree in School Counseling. She began working at Maur Hill - Mount Academy in August 2011, and later graduated from Benedictine College in 2019 with a masters degree in school leadership. Whitney resides in Atchison with her very spoiled dog, Bear.

After graduating high school, she attended McPherson College as a double major in graphic design and art education. After graduating and before coming to Maur Hill-Mount Academy, she worked for a year at a school in Nebraska. She is now the visual arts teacher and prefect at Maur Hill-Mount Academy.

Ella Coy is from Omaha, Nebraska where she attended Mercy High School. After high school, she moved to Kansas City to attend Rockhurst University and study secondary education and English. Ella taught middle school English and worked in standardized testing before earning her master’s degree in counseling from MidAmerica Nazarene University. Ella and her husband, Michael, moved to Atchison in 2023 with their daughter Rosalie and recently welcomed their second daughter, Elizabeth.

About Manuel Hernandez

Manuel Hernandez, aka Mr. H, is a native Californian, born and raised in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley and is a 1974 graduate of Redwood High School, in Visalia, CA. He graduated from the United States Military Academy, West Point, in 1978 with a bachelor of science in general engineering. He retired as a lieutenant colonel, from the Army, in August 2000, where he served in multiple leadership positions in the field artillery and began his teaching and coaching career at Immaculata. He began teaching theology and coaching tennis at Immaculata High School, Leavenworth, KS, in August 2000 and taught there until it closed in 2017, when he then began teaching at Maur Hill - Mount Academy. He expects to be teaching at least until his youngest graduates as a member of the class of 2024. He has served in parish ministries since 1982 and continues to do so as a member of Sacred Heart – St. Casimir Parish, Leavenworth. He married Maureen (Carney) Hernandez, of Prairie Village, KS, in 1993. Together they have always valued Catholic education and together they are the proud parents of five children, Theresa, IHS Cl of ‘12, Phillip, IHS Cl of ‘14, and Mark, IHS Cl of ‘16, Joseph, MH-MA Cl of ‘21 and Christina, MHMA Cl of ‘24.

About Mary Hoerner

Mary is from St. Louis Park, Minnesota and San Marcos, California, where she attended St. Joseph Academy for high school. She attended the University of Notre Dame, earning a degree in the Program of Liberal Studies, studying the Great Books and minoring in theology. Mary then earned her master’s degree in theology from Notre Dame, where she met her husband, Thomas, a Benedictine College graduate.

About Joe Hogan

Intervention | St. George

Joe, originally from St. Charles, Missouri, attended Catholic school throughout his academic career. He graduated from Benedictine College in May 2024 with degrees in theology and evangelization, and a minor in Spanish. During his time at Benedictine, Joe was actively involved in the pro-life movement, serving as the leader of the Ravens Respect Life from 2021 to 2022. He also served with St. Paul's Outreach (SPO), a missionary organization dedicated to fostering Catholic community on college campuses. Currently, Joe is pursuing an MBA and is passionate about leveraging his backgrounds in theology and business to advance the mission of Catholic education.

About Mary Catherine Karpilo

Music | St. Teresa

Mary Catherine was raised in Oklahoma City, OK and graduated from Mustang High School in 2020. She then attended Benedictine College, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in music, and graduated in 2024. Her undergraduate studies specialized in composition and sacred music. Mary Catherine began working at Maur Hill-Mount Academy as the music teacher immediately after graduation. In addition to her duties at MH-MA, she is currently the graduate assistant for the Raven Regiment Marching Band at Benedictine College while she pursues a master’s degree in teaching. Mary Catherine is now happy to call Atchison her home and is excited for what her future at MH-MA holds.

Yvette was born and raised in Burlington, CO, and graduated from Burlington High School in 1993. After high school she went on and attended the Community College of Cosmetology in Topeka, KS. After getting married she was then fortunate to be a stay-at-home wife and mom of five children for almost twenty years. In January of 2020 she began working at Maur Hill - Mount Academy as the school librarian. Yvette and her family are very happy to call Atchison home.

Christian has served as the coordinator of youth ministry for St. Benedict Parish and has coached several sports in and around Atchison.
